SEVERAL DISAGREEABLE CHOICES
TOM HUGHES + DARIA TCHAPANOVA : 2018.09.15
15 SETEMBRO A 10 OUTUBRO DE 2018 : INSTALAÇÃO VIDEO / COLAGENS
Daria Tchapanova’s 2017 collage series Reflecting is built of fragments of recognizable images. Photos of people and places become geometric elements along with pure color and shape. The works are visually arresting and semi abstract; they build something new from pieces of things we might know.
Tom Hughes’s large drawings from 2017 also speak of invention. These originate from photos and found images that he interlaces with words. The words sound familiar, but when assembled with the images resulting works, things change and meanings slip – sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, often both.
The two artists, working separately, come to this common ground: they are piecing something together in new ways. They are making something uncommon from the parts that surround everybody, perhaps showing a disjointed world they have each chosen to reassemble in their own most perfect way. Alternately delicate and bold, Several Disagreeable Choices shows us that the difficult things can be used to build something beautiful in an experimental and open way.
